Osmunda regalis "purpurascens", also called royal fern, is one of the largest native ferns. The habit is upright, with a loose clump. This fern has double-feathered, bronze-green leaves on purple stems. The foliage takes off in the spring a little bronze-purple. The fertile, fertile leaves have richly branched, brown-red clusters full of spores. This majestic fern likes a sheltered position (out of the wind) in partial shade or shade and a well-drained, humus-rich, moist to soggy soil. Osmunda regalis "purpurascens" is very hardy, tolerant of air pollution and once well established it can handle drier periods. It has few pests and is also disease resistant.
