Abelia grandiflora 'Edward Goucher', medium-sized, semi-evergreen, compact growing shrub with pink to violet-pink flowers, dark green, pointed, slightly hairy leaves and beautiful leaf discoloration in autumn. Alisma plantago-aquatica, in Dutch called large water plantain, is a deciduous aquatic plant with a high upright, widely distributed habit. The leaves are spoon-shaped, colored gray-green to silver-green. Water plantain blooms from June to August with white to pinkish white flowers in a loose panicle-shaped inflorescence. Alisma plantago-aquatica likes a position in full sun and prefers to stand 10 to 30 cm deep with its feet in the water, although it can also temporarily cope with drier conditions. Acca sellowiana
Acca Sellowiana, syn. Feijoa sellowiana, called pineapple guava in Dutch, is a medium-sized evergreen shrub from South America, with a bushy habit and decorative, green elliptical leaves with a silver-grey underside. This Brazilian guava flowers from June to October with fragrant, pink-white flowers with bright red stamens, followed after fertilization by edible green-red fruits with a sweet and sour pineapple flavour. Acca sellowiana likes a sheltered position in full sun and a neutral to calcareous well-drained soil that is not too dry, especially during the fruit season. In our climate, this plant is only moderately hardy, when the mercury dips below 10°c, some winter protection is still recommended.

Anagallis tenella, called tar guichelheil in Dutch, is a small deciduous native water or marsh plant with a low, creeping, carpet-forming habit. The leaves are ovate, opposite, short-stalked and colored gray-green. The plant blooms from June to August with small, light-scented, upward-facing pink, scented flowers. Anagallis tenella prefers a sunny position in moist to wet soil. Tar guichelheil is fairly hardy and tolerates coastal conditions. Acer capillipes, also called snake maple or striped bark maple, is a beautiful upright ornamental shrub with a round crown, which can reach a height of 8 to 12 meters at a blessed age (after 50 years). This acer is especially popular because of its beautiful green-brown bark with horizontal white stripes and its beautiful autumn color to yellow orange to deep red. The snake maple blooms with green-white flowers and has small red to copper-colored winged achenes. Does well in almost any well-drained soil, preferring slightly acidic. Beautiful solitaire, not very wind resistant.

Acer griseum, also popularly called paper maple, is a small medium - usually - multi-stemmed maple species, with a beautiful airy crown and funnel-shaped growth. The bloom does not have much ornamental value: green-yellow flowers on downy hairy stems raise the head. The leaves are elliptically roughly serrated and green-red in spring, bronze-coloured with grayish down hairs on the underside, olive-green leaves in summer. This Acer griseum is dioecious, male and female flowers bloom on separate trees.

Anemopsis californica blooms from May to September with white flowers with a remarkable gray-white anther, later decorative red spots and stripes appear on the petals. Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum', the red Japanese maple is a medium-sized shrub or small multi-stem tree, with upright broad form and slightly drooping branches, slightly fan-shaped acer. The acer palmatum atropurpureum blooms with purple-red flowers in May, June and is attractive because of its deeply cut, dark red to purple leaves and beautiful scarlet autumn colour.

Bacopa caroliniana
Bacopa caroliniana, in Dutch called water hyssop or broad bacopa, is an evergreen aquatic plant with a carpet-forming, creeping or floating habit. The oval, aromatic leaves are light green to brown-red colored (in bright sunlight), the plant blooms in spring and summer with small bell-shaped lilac-blue flowers both above and under water, but the flowers under water rot very quickly. Bacopa caroliniana prefers a sunny to partial shade and an acidic to neutral permanently moist soil. The plant is not really hardy and can best be overwintered in a container in a bright, frost-free place. It is evergreen, attracts butterflies and the leaves smell of lemon when bruised.

Acer palm. 'Bloodgood'
Acer palmatum bloodgood, medium-sized Japanese maple with little serrate and deeply dissected purplish-red leaves. It is a graceful shrub, growing vigorously upright during the first 7 years, with a narrow shape and especially popular for its beautiful leaves during spring, summer and autumn. The five to seven-lobed deeply dissected leaves are reddish-purple and remain that way until leaf fall. The acer palmatum bloodgood likes sun with light shade, preferably in a moist, slightly acidic soil, and somewhat sheltered from strong winds, not a coastal plant, but tolerant of air pollution.

Bletilla striata
Bletilla striata, usually called earth orchid or Japanese orchid in Dutch, is a bushy swamp plant with ground-shaped, ribbed, sword-shaped, medium green leaves. The main bloom of this orchid takes place in June and July, the flowers are violet pink to purple, orchid-like with a three-lobed lower lip. Bletilla striata prefers a position in partial shade or light shade and moist, well-drained, fertile soil. It is fairly hardy but will appreciate a good protective layer with mulch. Although it prefers moist soil, this earth orchid is also quite drought tolerant, it also tolerates sea wind and air pollution quite well, is disease resistant but can sometimes suffer from aphids, red spider mites and mealy bugs.
