Acorus calamus
Acorus calamus, called calamus in Dutch, is a deciduous, water-purifying, bank or swamp plant with a carpet-forming, proliferating habit. The leaves are sword-shaped, iris-like, aromatic and wrinkled at the edge, the leaf color is light green. Calamus blooms from June to August with discreet, small green flowers that are densely grouped in 6 to 8 cm long cobs. In our region, the plant only rarely forms red berries. Acorus calamus prefers a position in full sun, partial shade or shade and moist, soggy to wet soil. The plant is very hardy, attracts butterflies and bees, is pest free, tolerant to sea wind and good disease resistance.
