Acorus gramineus

Acorus gramineus, called calamus in Dutch, is a small to medium-sized, water-purifying, bank or swamp plant with a pol-forming and rhizome spreading habit. The leaves are narrow, stiff, grassy, aromatic and dark green in color. This calamus blooms from June to August with inconspicuous, small green flowers that are densely grouped in the flower spikes. In our region, the plant only rarely forms red berries. Acorus gramineus prefers a position in full sun or partial shade and moist, soggy to wet soil. The plant is reasonably hardy, attracts butterflies and bees, is pest free, tolerant to sea wind and good disease resistance.
