Magnolia stellata, also called star magnolia, is a small to medium-sized deciduous magnolia shrub with a round, bushy, upright shape and narrow oval, dark green leaves. It blooms in March and April with fragrant white star-shaped flowers that can contain up to 18 white ribbon-shaped petals. Magnolia stellata likes a position in full sun or light shade, somewhat sheltered from strong winds and prefers a not too heavy, acidic to neutral moist soil. This magnolia is low maintenance, needs little pruning, is fairly hardy, can tolerate some air pollution.

Here the leaves are soft, narrow and fern-like.

The shrub grows very thin with reddish-brown shoots, but the leaves are wonderfully fragrant. They have glands on the underside that give off a resinous smell when touched or bruised.
