Stipa gigantea
Stipa gigantea is called jet oats in Dutch. It is a particularly decorative, evergreen ornamental grass with a bushy leaf pile and high upright inflorescence. The leaves are narrow linear and gray-green. Jet oats flowers from June to September with loose, transparent, very tall, beige-colored flower spikes. As the seed matures, they turn golden yellow in color and take on an almost oat-like appearance. Stipa gigantea prefers a position in full sun and moderately fertile, moist, but well-drained soil. Spray oats are only moderately to reasonably hardy and require a sheltered place and good winter protection. This plant also tolerates some drought, is good sea breeze and air pollution tolerant and does not suffer from diseases or pests.
