Colocasia esculenta
Colocasia esculenta, in English called taro or elephant's ear. The leaves are deep green, ovate with a heart-shaped base and tapered at the top, they can reach 60 to 100cm long and serve as an umbrella in the tropics. Elephant ear blooms in July and August with typical arondskin-like inflorescence, the small female and male flowers are close together in a white to white-yellow spike. Colocasia esculenta likes a position in full sun or partial shade and a permanently moist, acidic to neutral soil.This plant is moderately hardy and can only be kept evergreen as a houseplant or in a heated greenhouse. Colocasia esculenta is tolerant to sea wind and air pollution and is not prone to diseases or pests.
