Ceratophyllum demersum, called thorn or coarse hornwort in Dutch, is a submerged aquatic plant without roots, with a very high water-purifying capacity. This oxygenating plant is a true cosmopolitan and occurs almost worldwide in sufficiently deep and fresh water. The leaves are dark green, branched fork-shaped, standing in whorls on long stems. This hornwort blooms in summer with small white flowers, the plant is monoecious, the male flowers have about 20 stamens, the female 1 pistil. The pollen floats through the water until it reaches the pistil, after fertilization olive green spiny achenes form. Thorn hornwort is very hardy, grows quickly, is not salt tolerant and only suitable for fresh water.

Acaena microphylla "Kupferteppich", also called spikelnootje or copper carpet in Dutch, is an evergreen perennial with a ground covering, creeping shape. This plant has small elongated compound leaves, reddish brown in color and with a serrated leaf margin. The white inflorescence is inconspicuous, but the red-brown fruits that follow it are particularly decorative. Acaena prefers a position in full sun or partial shade and prefers a calcareous to neutral, well-drained soil type. This plant is hardy, requires little maintenance, is sea wind tolerant and is usually used as a ground cover or as a plant for the rock garden.

Elodea canadensis
Elodea canadensis, called broad waterweed in Dutch, originates from North America. This submerged, evergreen aquatic plant with stems of 60cm and more has an enormous water-purifying capacity and vigor. It quickly forms runners and can form entire mats in a short time. The leaves are oblong, lanceolate, dark green, usually in whorls of 3 on the long stems. Elodea is dioecious, but in our regions we usually only find female plants. The flowers are inconspicuous, greenish white to pinkish, the flowering period runs from May to August. Waterweed likes a place with sufficient sunlight and prefers to grow in a mixture of clay and peat, but it also comes into its own in a sandy soil.

Acaena microphylla is a low creeping plant that is best used as ground cover in sunny, dry places. Acaena microphylla works best in fairly large areas of 1 to several meters. The inflorescence during the summer is rather inconspicuous with white small flowers on thin peduncles. Variegated pennywort likes a position in the sun and does well in any moist to normally dry soil. Hydrocotyle sieboldii 'Variegata' is hardy, tolerates drought, sea wind and air pollution and has little or no problems with pests and diseases.

Mosquito grass flowers from June to August with striking purple-red flower spikes. This grass likes a position in full sun and a well-permeable soil that is not too wet. The plant is very drought tolerant, tolerates sea wind and air pollution, but is unfortunately only moderately hardy.

Myriophyllum crispata, also called featherwort, is a semi-evergreen aquatic plant with a creeping, floating habit. The plant has bright green, feather-shaped, almost needle-like leaves, which are whorled around the stems. The plant is monoecious and flowers in the months of June to August, with very small, white to reddish brown, axillary spikes. Myriophyllum crispata likes a position in full sun or partial shade and a moist to wet soil, it prefers standing or weakly flowing water at a depth between 20 and 60 cm. In a sufficiently deep location the plant is hardy, it is also sea wind tolerant and tolerates slightly brackish water and tolerates air pollution. Fish lay their eggs on it and amphibians find shelter there.
