Polypodium vulgare is called common oak fern in Dutch. It is a valuable ground cover native fern. It has single-pinnate, dark green, coarse leathery, sword-shaped leaves with reddish-brown spores on the underside. This small fern likes a sheltered position in partial shade or shade and a well-drained, humus-rich, moist, lime-poor soil.
