Origanum vulgare

Origanum vulgare, also called marjoram or mountain joy, is a semi-evergreen herbaceous perennial, with a bushy, carpet-forming habit. The leaves are broad, ovate, slightly hairy and dark green in color. Marjoram flowers from July to August, with purple-pink to pink-white flowers in branched clusters. Origanum vulgare prefers a position in full sun and a well-drained, preferably calcareous, soil type. Once established, the plant is drought tolerant. Marjoram is hardy, tolerates sea wind and is disease resistant. The leaves are used in meat and vegetable dishes, but also medicinally, as an antiseptic and externally against muscle pain, arthritis, asthma, ... An infusion of marjoram in the bath water offers a relaxing effect.
