Deschampsia cespitosa in Dutch, called rough smele, is a large, evergreen grass with a sturdy upright growth and pol-forming habit. The dark green leaves are stiff, elongated, leathery and shiny. This smele blooms from June to August with airy, first green-yellow flower panicles, which turn a beautiful golden color as soon as the seed ripens. Deschampsia cespitosa 'goldtau' prefers a position in full sun or partial shade and an acid to neutral, well-permeable soil rich in humus.
