Physocarpus opulifolius "summer wine" is a medium-sized, deciduous spirea. It is a multi-stemmed shrub with an upright, bushy habit, compact and refined. The leaves are three to five lobed, toothed, deep burgundy in spring and tending to green in summer, ovate to rounded. This spirea blooms in May and June with white to pink-white, fragrant flowers in umbels that attract bees and butterflies. Physocarpus opulif. "summer wine" likes a position in full sun or partial shade, well-drained, humus-rich soil with a preference for slightly acidic soil. The plant is hardy, sea wind tolerant, air pollution resistant and has few problems with diseases or pests.
