Pieris jap. 'Debutante'
Pieris japonica "Debutante" is called rock heath in Dutch. It is an evergreen, small dwarf shrub with a bushy, compact shape. Not only are the shiny, elongated leaves that first open copper-red in spring and turn green afterwards, but also the wine-red flower buds that precede the small, creamy-white, fragrant, bell-like flowers in winter. This Pieris japonica "Debutante" is hardy, likes a position in full sun or partial shade and prefers a well-drained, moist, acidic soil. It requires little pruning, is low maintenance, attracts butterflies and bees and is also fairly tolerant of sea wind and air pollution.
