Echinops rit. 'Veitch's Blue'

Echinops ritro, in Dutch called ball thistle, is a medium-sized perennial with a columnar upright shape and a pol-forming habit. The leaves are thistle-like, gray-green on top and silvery white on the underside, the leaf is spiky and deeply cut. Echinops ritro blooms from July to the end of September with steel blue spherical flower heads consisting of hundreds of small star-shaped blue flowers. Globe thistle likes a position in full sun or partial shade and does well in any well-drained soil, including poor soils. The plant is hardy, fairly drought tolerant, sea wind resistant, air pollution tolerant, disease free and a good nectar plant for bees and butterflies.
