Knautia macedonica

Knautia macedonica, syn. Scabiosa rumelica, known in Dutch as 'meadow crown', is an attractive deciduous perennial with an upright and polished habit. The leaves are gray-green, slightly lobed at the base of the plant and more divided higher up. from July to September this meadow crown blooms with dark red to purple-red scabiosa-like flowers of about 3.5 to 4.5 cm in diameter. Knautia macedonica is a sunflower and likes a position in full sun, the soil must be moderately fertile, well permeable and neutral or rich in calcium. The plant is hardy, drought tolerant, tolerates sea wind and air pollution and has good nectar for bees and butterflies.
