Helleborus niger

Helleborus niger, also called Christmas rose, is a semi-evergreen perennial with a compact, clump-forming habit and dark green, leathery, serrated leaves up to 20cm long with five to nine broad leaflets. The Christmas rose blooms from January to April with green-white flowers that bloom later pink. This hellebore prefers a position in partial shade, but also does well in full shade under tall trees. It prefers well-drained, neutral or alkaline soil, but also tolerates slightly acidic soil. This plant is fairly hardy, but does appreciate some winter protection in severe winters.
