Eryngium planum

Eryngium planum is called in Dutch cross thistle or blue thistle and is a deciduous perennial with a pol-forming habit and elongated, serrated, dark green leaves. This cross thistle blooms in July and August with attractive amethyst blue flowers that can also be used as a cut flower. This plant likes a position in full sun and does well in any well-permeable, not too fertile soil. Eryngium planum is very hardy, reasonably drought tolerant, tolerates sea wind and air pollution well and attracts numerous bees and butterflies. In less than optimal growing conditions, this cross thistle can suffer from root rot (too wet winters) or mildew.
