Echinops bannaticus 'Taplow Blue', called ball thistle in Dutch, is a medium to large perennial with a columnar upright shape and a pol-forming habit. The leaves are gray-green on the top and silver-white on the underside, the leaf is spiky and deeply incised. Echinops bannaticus blooms from July to the end of August with blue spherical flower heads consisting of hundreds of small star-shaped blue flowers. Globe thistle likes a position in full sun or partial shade and does well in any well-drained soil, including poor soils. The plant is hardy, fairly drought tolerant, sea wind resistant, air pollution tolerant, disease free and a good nectar plant for bees and butterflies.
