Astilbe 'Red Sentinel'
Astilbe japonica "red sentinel" is a deciduous perennial with a bushy and compact upright shape. The leaves of this astilbe are fern-like, compound, glossy and dark green in spring, summer and fall, and are on decorative mahogany-red stems. In July and August, this beautiful spirea blooms abundantly with scarlet red, firmly upright flower panicles. This japonica hybrid likes a position in partial shade to shade and can only handle full sun if the substrate is sufficiently moist in the summer. It does well in any well-drained, not too dry soil, is hardy, attracts bees and butterflies, reasonably tolerant to air pollution but not really sea wind resistant.
