Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace'
Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace', also called red parsley elder, is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a round upright shape and a broad crown with drooping branches when mature. The deeply incised leaves are deep purple-red to almost black and are very reminiscent of the Japanese maple. In June and July, this elderberry blooms with large fragrant pink-white flower clusters, followed in autumn by edible purple-black berries. Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace' likes a position in full sun or partial shade and does well in any type of soil. It is hardy, tolerates sea wind and air pollution well, attracts bees, insects and butterflies.
