Sambucus nigra 'Black Beauty'
Sambucus nigra 'Black Beauty', also called purple elder, is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a round upright shape and a broad crown with drooping branches when mature. The pinnate leaf is composed of dark purple elliptic leaf segments with a serrated edge. In May and June, this black elderberry blooms with large, lemon-scented, pink-white flower clusters, followed in autumn by edible black berries. Sambucus nigra 'Black Beauty' likes a position in full sun or partial shade and does well in any type of soil. It is hardy, tolerates sea wind and air pollution well, attracts bees, insects and butterflies.
