Panicum virgatum 'Hot Rod' has an upright habit and narrow leaves.

The leaves are grey-green in spring and then turn deep red-purple to almost black very early in summer.

In early autumn the leaf takes on a beautiful reddish-brown autumn colour.

Flowering occurs in late summer with red flower panicles.
