Charlei is a short-lived, usually biennial plant, which forms a rosette with hairy, ovate leaves in the first year. The flowering stems are ± 1 m high, large and richly branched. They flower in the second year. The striking stipules are pink, lilac or white, sometimes slightly green tinged.
