Rosa canina

The dog rose (Rosa canina) is a naturally occurring rose in the Benelux. The shrub is native to Europe, Northwest Africa and West Asia. The plant has been introduced in North America. The shrub grows to a height of 1 to 3 meters. The leaves and branches are green or sometimes reddish. The spines are mostly hook-shaped. The dog rose blooms in June and July with 4-6 cm large, white or pink flowers. The petals are much longer than the sepals. The fruit is an oval, red-orange, 1.5-2 cm rose hip. The seeds can develop without fertilization.
