Menyanthes trifoliata, also called water three-leaf, is a perennial, deciduous swamp plant with a low, spreading shape and a long, spongy rhizome. The leaves are triangular, medium green, long-stalked and root-like. Water three-leaf flowers in April and May, with funnel-shaped, white to light pink flowers in long-stemmed, upright flower clusters. Menyanthes trifoliata prefers a position in the sun or partial shade and a, preferably, moist, lime-poor soil. The plant is hardy, tolerant to sea wind, is resistant to disease and has few pests. Menyanthes trifoliata has become rare in the Netherlands and Belgium and is legally protected.
