Iris versicolor

Iris versicolor, called American blue iris in English, is an upright, clump-forming and rhizomatous, evergreen perennial of North American origin. The basal leaves are lanceolate, medium green in color and sometimes have a purple hue at the base. This iris blooms from May to June with fragrant, violet-purple, orris-like flowers with pendulous petals with a beautiful white-yellow mark near the center. Iris versicolor likes a position in full sun and a neutral to acidic, humus-rich, moist soil, it can also be planted with its feet in water. This iris is hardy and tolerates sea breeze and air pollution quite well. Occasionally this iris can be attacked by snails and saw wasps.
