Thymus vulgaris is an aromatic, evergreen, bushy semi-shrub. The plant grows to a height of 20 to 30 centimeters. Thymus vulgaris is called Real Thyme in Dutch. The stem of the plant is square, green-brown and lignified in the second season.

The plant has upright branches. The elongated to linear leaves are sessile and have a strongly rolled edge. The underside has short felt-like hair.

True thyme blooms with lilac or pink, sometimes white flowers

The plant is native to the Mediterranean area. The species is widely cultivated and mainly used as a culinary herb.
