Rhododendron 'Wilgen's Ruby'

Rhododendron 'Wilgen's Ruby' is a medium-sized evergreen rhodo with a round and compact upright shape. The leaves are large, elliptical, slightly curled and medium green to olive green in color. This arboreum hybrid blooms mainly in May and June with pink-red funnel-shaped flowers with a fine red-brown macula in convex flower clusters. Rhododendron 'Wilgen's Ruby' likes a location in filtered sunlight or partial shade, sheltered from chilly winds and with a shaded root zone, but it can also handle a location in full sun. It requires an acidic, moist, well-drained soil that should never be allowed to dry out completely, requires little pruning and is reasonably hardy, winter protection is recommended in severe, persistent frost.
