Asplenium scolopendrium

Asplenium scolopendrium, syn. Phyllitis scolopendrium, in Dutch called tongue fern, is a graceful evergreen fern with a pol-shaped habit. The long dark green leaves are glossy, lanceolate, leathery, crested, unsprung and evergreen. The tongue fern likes a position in partial shade to shade and a well-permeable humus-rich and calcareous, normal to moist soil. Asplenium scolopendrium is hardy, tolerant of sea wind and air pollution, and once well established, it can handle drier periods. The tongue fern is disease resistant, although rust can occasionally occur in wet winters. This fern is suitable for the city garden, informal garden, cottage garden and can be used as border planting, underplanting, ground cover.
