Miscanthus sinensis "Red Chief", usually called beautiful cane in Dutch, is a medium-sized deciduous grass species. This beautiful reed has a bushy, upright shape with narrow, linear mid-green leaves with a vertical white center stripe, in autumn the leaves turn a beautiful orange-red. Miscanthus sinensis "Red Chief" blooms from August to October with reddish-brown flower panicles that turn creamy white to silvery white later in the fall when the seed matures. This beautiful reed likes a sunny position and a well-drained, slightly moist, moderately fertile soil. Miscanthus sinensis "Red Chief" is hardy and once established drought tolerant, tolerating air pollution and sea wind.
