Phormium tenax "Purpureum" or New Zealand flax is a very decorative, evergreen plant. It is clump-forming and upright in shape with beautiful, architectural, sword-shaped leaves in a reddish purple to coppery color. After a few years, this phormium blooms with striking high flower panicles and tubular, dark red flowers on blue-purple stems. Phormium tenax "Purpureum" likes a sheltered position in full sun or light shade and a well-drained soil. It is resistant to sea wind, tolerant to air pollution, very resistant to disease and has few problems with vermin.
