Nelumbo is a perennial rhizome aquatic plant that lives in the mud at the bottom of shallow pools, lakes, lagoons, swamps and flooded fields. The large, shield-shaped leaves float or rise above the surface of the water on 1 - 2 m long petioles. The petiole is light green, cylindrical, bare and sometimes spiny. The leaf blade is 20-90 cm in diameter, soft green to blue-green. The leaf margin is smooth and wavy. The leaf blade shows a central depression where the petiole and the leaf blade meet. The veins depart radially from this central point.

Oenanthe aquatica, also known as waterwort, is an indigenous pioneer plant for wet locations in Belgium and the Netherlands, with varying water levels. The plant is airy and upright, the leaves and flowers are on stems that are filled with marrow. The leaf above water has two or three pinnates, green with ovate, pointed slips and under water it is even more finely divided, actually you can best compare it with a chervil leaf. Water cog blooms from June to August, with umbels, full of scented, white, mini flowers. The plant prefers a position in full sun or partial shade and a moist position with varying water levels. Oenanthe aquatica is hardy, tolerant of sea wind and air pollution, attracts bees and bumblebees and also tolerates brackish water.

Oenanthe fistulosa "Flamingo", also known as piperwort, is a pioneer plant for wet locations, with varying water levels. The plant is airy and upright, the leaves and flowers grow on sturdy, grooved, hollow stems. The leaf above water is single to double pinnate, green, with pink colored, nice variegated leaves. Pipefruit flowers from June to August, with terminal umbels, full of fragrant, white, mini flowers. The plant prefers a position in full sun or partial shade and a moist position with varying water levels. Oenanthe fistulosa "Flamingo" is hardy, tolerant to sea wind and air pollution, attracts butterflies, bees and bumblebees and also tolerates light brackish water.

Orontium aquaticum, also called golden club or golden butt, is a swamp plant native to North America, with a pol-forming habit. The blue-green leaves are elongated, ovate to narrow, elliptical and covered with a wax coating, hence its English nickname: "never wets". Golden club blooms in May and June, with decorative arum-like, golden yellow flower cobs on beautifully contrasting white flower stems. Orontium aquaticum prefers a position in full sun or partial shade and a permanently moist clay or loamy soil, preferably with its feet in the water. This plant is fairly hardy, although it appreciates a sheltered place or winter protection. It is low maintenance, tolerates sea wind and has little trouble with pests or diseases.

Persicaria amphibia, also called peat root, is a plant that occurs both in water and on land. The leaves are elliptical to lanceolate, usually floating and colored dark green. Persicaria amphibia blooms from late June to October, with pink to rose-red terminal flower spikes. This persicaria likes a position in full sun or partial shade, is ph flexible, reasonably drought tolerant, but grows fastest in well-drained, moist soil. Peat root thrives in the swamp zone, wet grasslands, the pond edge and in the coastal region. Persicaria bistorta is a tall, deciduous viper root. The leaves are elliptical to lanceolate, medium green to dark green in color. Persicaria bistorta blooms from the end of May to August, with elegant, light pink flower spikes. Phalaris arundinacea "Picta" is called variegated reed grass or canary grass in Dutch. It is a variegated, medium-sized, evergreen ornamental grass. The leaves are medium green to dark green with broad creamy white vertical stripes. Canary grass flowers from June to July with airy, narrow, light green flower panicles. This grass likes a sunny position and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. The plant is very hardy, reasonably drought tolerant, tolerates sea wind and air pollution well, has few problems with diseases and is rarely plagued by pests. However, it is a usurer, through its underground rhizomes it can spread quickly, so limiting is the message.

Pontederia cordata, in Dutch called pike herb or swamp hyacinth, is a particularly rewarding aquatic plant for the small to large pond. With its special appearance, sloping habit and pointed heart-shaped, dark green leaves combined with the beautiful blue elongated flower spikes, it offers the pond an exotic look. Pontederia cordata prefers a position in full sun or partial shade, a somewhat loamy soil and a water depth of between 20 and 60 cm. If you plant the plant at a minimum height of 30 cm, you do not need to take additional protective measures during the winter. If you want to keep the plant in the shallow swamp zone of the pond, you will have to put an extra leaf cover on top of the plant during the winter as protection against frost.

With its lance-shaped, dark green leaves combined with the beautiful pastel blue elongated flower spikes, it offers the pond an exotic look. Pontederia lanceolata prefers a position in full sun or partial shade, a somewhat loamy soil and a water depth of between 30 and 60 cm. If you plant the plant at a minimum height of 30 cm, you do not need to take additional protective measures during the winter. If you want to keep the plant in the shallow swamp zone of the pond, you will need to add extra foliage on top of the plant during the winter. Pontederia lanceolata is also passionate about butterflies, bees and bumblebees.

Potentilla palustris, in Dutch cinquefoil or also called swamp strawberry, is a deciduous swamp plant with a bushy, creeping habit. The leaves are three to seventy, blue-green to gray-green in color, deeply serrated and with felt-like hair. Cinquefoil blooms from June to the end of August with burgundy flowers whose sepals are exceptionally larger than the petals. Potentilla palustris prefers a position in full sun or partial shade, along the water's edge or in shallow water in an acidic to neutral soil. The plant is very hardy, attracts butterflies and bees and has few problems with diseases or pests.
